First Impressions: Charlotte

It’s new anime time! Spring has finished and with the coming of the new season comes a lot of new shows.

Possibly the most highly anticipated of the summers shows is Charlotte. Written Jun Maeda and produced by Key Studios, we’re seeing, for the first time, the same combination that created Angel Beats!. No wonder people are excited.

So the main characters have super powers. Sounds good.

Charlotte takes place in a largely normal world where are very small amount of teenagers have supernatural powers. One such person is the main character, Yuu Otasaka, who has the power to take over the consciousness of others around him. For much of the first episode, he uses his power to cheat in tests to get into a top school and then to impress the girl he likes – it makes him come across as pretty dislikable kind of guy. That said this episode sets the show up as a good comedy.

Yuu doesn't start as the most endearing of characters.

Things all change however when two new characters appear: Nao Tomori and Joujirou Takajou. Nao appears as if she will take the role of female lead, going out of her way to chastise Yuu, while also being quite laid back and caring around Yuu’s sister. Obvious links will be drawn between Joujirou and Takamatsu from Angel Beats! if only because of the glasses and his split gender tendencies.

All in all, the show shapes up well from episode 1.

After the first episode we haven’t really been given many clues as to what the long term plot of the show will be. Possibly we might be looking at something to do with Yuu’s family – but at this stage it’s all speculation. I’ve got high hopes for this show and the first episode hasn’t made me think otherwise.

  1. Cool!! Can’t wait to check out this show as I recently fell in love with Angel Beats. I just wrote a post ranting about it actually and just wondering, is it just me or are hinata and otinashi the perfect ship? 😀
