In the past few weeks Charlotte has become this season’s anime to watch. What started off as a nostalgic Angel Beats! throwback has grown into a twist filled, action packed, feels heavy train ride into the trials and tribulations of Yuu Otasaka and those around him.
After last week’s episode it was hard to tell where the show was going with it’s final three episodes. The show had seemingly resolved what could have easily been a problem for the whole show. But this is Jun Maeda. So things won’t stop happening until the end of the thirteenth episode.
The episode opens by skipping the opening and reintroducing Yuu (again) and Mayumi to their older brother Shunsuke. For the first time in the show Yuu actually makes the decision to reflect on the scenario he has found himself in as well as what he has just been through. Compared to episode 7, Yuu shows some independence and maturity, while inwardly thinking of Nao, showing again the effect she has had on him as a person.
It seems a bit late on in the series to introduce a new threat to the ability wielders, but that is just what happened. As one of the helpers of Shunsuke’s group was blackmailed, a foreign terrorist organisation captures Kumagami and Nao and demands Yuu in exchange for their release.
The following events are as emotional as you could imagine them to be. It’s also worth commenting on the introduction of a new enemy so late on in the show: at this stage it could be that the events of this group will have further repercussions in the final two episodes, however if the point was only to make us feel sad for this one episode – as was the case with certain parts of Angel Beats! – it would be a huge black mark against the show as a whole.
I was impressed with episode 11 of Charlotte. Not only did we get some real signs of genuine development from Yuu, we also learnt the origin of the shows name. To go alongside that, we got another dose of the famous Maeda feels and though it wasn’t surprising, it doesn’t mean it wasn’t fantastic. Now all that remains to be seen is can the show finish well in the final two episodes.
And a final thought in the timeless words of Rintarou Okabe: ‘this is the choice of steins;gate’.
Charlotte episode 11 can be legally streamed for premium users now and everyone else from Saturday 19th September 18:30 BST. The season’s penultimate episode Promise will be available the following Saturday (19th or 26th depending on your subscription.)
Remember guys, making anime is a livelihood for creators! If it’s available legally, watch it legally!
