Christmas and Attack on Titan season 2 trailer

Merry Christmas everyone! It’s been a lifetime since I’ve posted anything here so in the next few days I’ll be writing an update of all of the things I’d like to write about in the next couple of months. There is though a reason for coming back to write on Christmas Day: the biggest piece of anime news since I’ve been watching anime (at least in my mind), Attack on Titan season 2 is coming, and last night (in the UK, early morning in Japan), we got the first trailer!

If you asked most people in the west to name one anime they would probably say Attack on Titan and though I like to think that I’ve got better at seeing through the hype generated by shows, I have to say Attack on Titan completely deserves it. That’s why I was so excited when I saw this new trailer had been released and I’ll join the crowds in saying that it’s fantastic.

For a minute and a half’s worth of content we gain a lot from the trailer. Most notably an increase in the number of, if not intelligent, unique titans. The main new addition is a titan that might be described as gorilla like known as the beast titan but also there seemed to be an agile jumping titan that had a particularly good aim for the nape of other titans.

There isn’t much in the way of chronology to the trailer thouh we can pick out some definable events. As well as introducing the new titans, we also see the colossal and armoured titans return, Eren transforming, Armin being Armin, Sasha looking more angry than ever before and Connie having the best expression to show the sum up the show in one shot. We also get a glimpse of another titan fight between Eren and the Armoured Titan to close the trailer.

What do we gain from the little we see of these two titans? The beast titan is seen watching another titan eat a soldier. Not that we should read too much into short bursts of facial expressions, but it appeared as if the titan was enjoying watching the soldier (whose expression sees the return of the agonised ‘I’m about to be eaten’ look) becoming the smaller titans lunch.

The other new titan that we see is far less co-operative with other titans, jumping from one to another taking chunks out of it’s own kind, causing problems and generally being a hazard. This leads us to the possibility that there are factions within the intelligent titans and that things aren’t so black and white as we might have imagined towards the end of season 1.

Levi doesn't get much show time through this first trailer.

What was the trailer missing though? Well the focus on titans as well as the random new survey corps member (who I had nothing to say about) mean on the whole we didn’t see that much of season 1 favourites. Levi gets a couple of frames, Erwin gets one frame and unless I’ve missed something over the 15 or so times I’ve watched through, Mikasa is vaguely in the bottom of one shot . Generally though, the trailer ticks all of the boxes, everything that might have drawn you to season 1 is back and, by the looks of it, even better.

Happy Birthday Levi, your birthday present has been much appreciated by all of us and Merry Christmas to everyone else!

      1. Exactly. About time. I’m so happy they finally released this trailer. There were rumours that s2 would be released thisbyear 2016, but that didn’t prove to be true. Perhaps they were just talking about the trailer. Ahaha! Anyway, all of us AoT fans are happy right now. Thanks for sharing this.
