I have discovered a problem. By making a list of my favourite anime girls, I’ve already written about my ‘anime crush’. That said, I suppose you’re just going to have to read a bit more about Rin.
Rin Toosaka needs little introduction on this blog, but I’ll give you one anyway. Master in the fifth holy grail war of Fate/Stay Night and summoner of the servant Archer. She is one of three main female characters in the franchise and is the main female in the Unlimited Blade Works route of the visual novel.
Without doubt, there are a lot of things to like about Rin. Many people will tell you that she is the archetype of the tsundere character type and to some extent they are right, particularly if you watch the first incarnation of the anime (depicting the Fate route of the visual novel). However, watch the Unlimited Blade Works anime and you will see other sides to Rin.
What is so brilliant about Rin is the multiple layers to her character. In the opening episodes we see a fierce, independent young mage with an excellent, if incomplete understanding of magic. She also shows a desire to be responsible and fulfil the ambitions of her family but is not so perfect as to be able to go about it as effectively as others (such as her father in Fate/Zero) when she summons the Archer class servant – an action she herself views as a disappointment.
I know what you’re thinking, everything I’m saying is all well and good but, why is Rin my anime crush and not just my favourite character? Besides everything that I mentioned above, which by themselves are pretty good reasons, Rin amongst other things is cute, caring and knows how to organise a date. It is a testament to the quality of UBW as an anime that all of these characteristics begin to show themselves at the mid-season finale before the story diverges from the Fate plot line.
In the second half of UBW, we get to see more of Rin’s great aspects. Despite her initial stubborn independence, she is shown to be a excellent team player who is willing to be her intelligence and capability towards a much more selfless cause than we initially may have believed.
I also a particular soft spot for the final episode of UBW – I don’t want to spoil it for anyone so won’t say much more – but trust me when I say that if you liked Rin up to that point, you’ll enjoy that episode a whole lot.
Let me know what you think of Rin in the comments and maybe who your anime crush is too?
