Less than a week to go until episode one of season two fellow Attack on Titan fans! Today I managed to watch the second in a series of interviews conducted by Aniplus Asia with key members of the staff from the new season, this time with new director Masashi Koizuka.
There was some… mild discomfort, shall we say, among fans when it was announced that Tetsuro Araki wouldn’t be holding onto his position of director for season two of Shingeki no Kyojin: although he does have an overseeing role as Chief Director, the director role is going to be taken by former assistant director Masashi Koizuka. I was really happy to hear about the relationship between the two directors for the new season – it sounds like Araki will be managing the seiyuu’s as well as storyboarding, while Koizuka will be in charge of animation.
He also reiterated Araki in terms of characters to look out for in season two. While Eren, Armin and Mikasa will clearly still be around, it sounds as if they won’t be as essential to the story as they were last time. From what Koizuka says (as well as Araki), we should be watching out for Krista and Ymir, characters that we didn’t get to see much of in season one.
Unsurprisingly, it sounds as if the staff are really excited about creating the anime and actually continuing to pick up on the nuances of the manga that were done so well first time around. Koizuka even went so far as to say he’s aiming for season two not only to be as good as season one, but even better. Bold claim, but I’m willing to go along with it because this is Attack on Titan and I’m sure the next part of the manga could be adapted to be as good as that.
Overall, it’s a really interesting and reassuring interview that’s put my mind at ease with only 5 (!!!) days to go until episode one of season two airs.
Thanks for reading! 🙂
