This seems like a pretty apt time to be writing an article on this topic, what with episode five of season two airing last Saturday, and more sure to come in the coming weeks.
As far as the anime is concerned so far there are six titans that are actually people shifters: Eren, Annie (Female Titan), Beast, Armoured and Colossal, plus the latest reveal in the last couple of episodes. The Beast, Armoured and Colossal’s identities remain a mystery at this stage, but if I had to choose someone who could turn into a titan but couldn’t, who would it be?
It doesn’t actually take much thinking to get the answer to this. As funny as it would be for Sasha to turn into a titan, Levi as titan would be so incredible it’s impossible not to choose him.
There are a couple of reasons why I go for Levi and I’ll start with the basic one: he’d be epic. From what we’ve seen so far in anime or manga, a titan shifters abilities as a titans are linked intrinsically to their abilities and emotions as a human. Levi is the strongest, most skilled soldier in all of humanity – in the few scenes we’ve actually got to see him go at full pelt (I’m thinking most obviously of when he teams up with Mikasa to recover Eren from the Female Titan) he is incredibly nimble and fast, traits that would fit a new titan really well!
The second reason links to the fact that, as an experienced solider of the Survey Corps, Levi has witnessed many of his friends die at the hands of the titans. In much the same way as it is interesting to see Eren channel his anger as a titan, I think it would be really interesting to see how Levi emotionally deals with becoming the same as the monsters that killed so many of his comrades.
Who knows who will end up shifting into a titan by the end of the manga? There have been a lot of twists I haven’t seen coming so far and I wouldn’t be surprised if there were more before the end.
Is there anyone you’d like to see as a titan? What do you think Levi would be like if he could transform? Let me know in the comments!
