Spring time Saturdays #1 – It’s all about the opening

Coming into this season there seemed to be varying views on what was on offer. Fans of existing shows were being spoilt while those looking for something new felt a little left out. General spring observations aside, it just so happened that a lot of what I’m watching (including Winter leftovers) air on a Saturday – and let’s not beat around the bush, any opportunity for a good alliterative feature title should not be passed up, so welcome to Spring time Saturdays! Appearing on Sundays or Mondays, this’ll be a condensed version of the famous(ish) episode focus thing I do (every so) often. But let’s not drag things out, week 1 starts here.

My Hero Academia Season 3 (episode 1)

Is this the anime of 2018? Will it be as popular as season 2? Maybe to both of those questions, but season 3 of 2017’s biggest anime started off pretty well. While we don’t see any new character development or any big hero-villain face offs, we did see the classic humour that we’ve come to love in the first pool episode of the shows run (this is a long running shounen, we can expect something similar again).

‘A study of people and penguins’ – a review of A Place Further than the Universe

For obvious reasons doing the high school drama thing outside of a high school isn’t common in anime. When I decided to watch A Place Further than the Universe, or Yorimoi as it is also known, I was (I think rightly) cautious about the possibility of melodrama and over-seriousness.

These aren’t things that you need to worry about.

Hidden perspectives in White Album II

White Album II is the classic love triangle scenario. In fact, it is the classic love triangle scenario turned up to eleven. Two of three don’t know what they want and in the end the one that did to start with is the one that seems to lose out the most.

whitealbum_5.png

But for most of the show it didn’t seem like that. I want to show by traversing time and missing certain events out because of the particular perspective shown, White Album II becomes more effective than other similar anime.

‘I play music to be special’ a review of Sound! Euphonium

Anime has a way of telling the everyday story in a way that few other mediums have – ongoing live action drama often feels the need to add unrealistic suspense, conflict or trauma to make the story detached enough from our real lives. For slice-of-life anime though, escapism still isn’t off the table, it’s just presented in a different, often more engaging, way. And when it comes to slice-of-life anime no one does it quite like Kyoto Animation – add in the music element and Sound! Euphonium screams promise before episode 1 even airs.

Synopsis

Kumiko Oumae plays euphonium, a lesser known, less glamorous member of the big band scene. After finishing middle school with little success or appetite for more involvement she resolves to finding another club in high school, only to be dragged along to the band by the new friends she makes on the first day. Despite trepidations joining when she sees former classmate Reina Kousaka in the band, she reluctantly joins and is funnelled back into playing euphonium by vice-president and head of the bass section, Asuka Tanaka.

Over the course of two seasons, Sound! Euphonium follows the members of Kitauji High School band in their attempts to reach the nationals, come to terms with their past and deal with the trials and tribulations everyday high school life.

First Impressions: Darling in the FranXX

As I mentioned in a previous post, I’ve been struggling to pick out shows to watch from Winter 2018’s offering. Despite it’s questionable title and some apprehensions I very much still have about it, it is particularly good that I stumbled across Darling in the FranXX.

franxx_4

Best described as a Sci-Fi-Mecha with potential to become a romance, Darling in the FranXX is set in a future world where the only children that are born are locked in a the so called ‘birdcage’ in order to train to as ‘parasites’, pilots of humanoid mechs known as FranXX that fight monsters called Klaxosaurs that threaten human civilization.

The Anime Watching Challenge 2018

So you’ll remember that for 2016 and 2017 I started MyAnimeList’s annual anime watching challenge and… failed. I’m not going to be put off though – it’s time for another attempt, and no less ambitious I might add. Fall 2017 in review

Seasonal anime in 2017 has not been amazing. Maybe it’s because I’ve chosen badly or because what did air just wasn’t to my taste, but there have been very few shows that I can honestly say will stand out when I look back at anime in the future.

It is unfortunately the case then that the worst of the anime I’ve experienced came in the final three months of the year. That’s not to say that there weren’t good anime airing in Fall, if ratings and fellows bloggers reviews are anything to go by then I know that is the case for sure, but I just didn’t see any of them.

landofthelustrous_1

As well as Fate/Apocrypha which started in the summer, I only picked up four shows for the Fall and in one way or another they all disappointed me in some way. That’s not to say I haven’t enjoyed what I’ve watched since October – I saw the second season of My Hero Academia and moments of a couple of the shows were pretty good while others made me smile just because of how bad they are. Anyhow, let’s go through each one in some more depth.

Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family to get anime

It’s a crazy world out there kids.

I’m not usually one for spur of the moment short posts but I just had to share this with you all. The Fate/Stay Night spin off manga, Emiya-san Chi no Khoi Gohan is getting an anime.

Yes, in the same vein as the parody Carnival Phantasm, this spin off will have all your favourite Fate characters but will focus on cooking and food. There’s nothing to say that this won’t be of a decent quality though – expect all of the main series voice actors as well as UBW director Takahiro Miura on board.

I find it shocking that this is even a manga, let alone worthy of getting adapted into anime format. Although there aren’t many details yet, I’m guessing that, as a web anime it will be released in shorter episodes – but who knows. We won’t have to wait for long though, as the first episode will air on January 25th (western platform TBA).

Well let me know what you think of this – I’m not sure if my bemusement towards this is good or bad at the moment so maybe someone else can clear things up for me…

My year in anime: 2017

Happy New Year everyone! It’s time for my year in review.

For many of us who write aniblogs, we watch a lot of anime so over the course of twelve months we end up with a huge amount to summarise. In this post I want to summarise my year in anime month by month with my favourite show/film. Let’s go!

January

Anime watched: 10

#1: Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance

evangelion_1

January was notable because I watched all three seasons of Haikyuu! (I know – I got into it haha!) However, despite enjoying Karasuno High’s journey to the nationals the highlight of the month had to be the second instalment in the Evangelion movie reboot, You Can (Not) Advance. I’ve never really understood the hype around the original TV series, but I enjoyed it enough to give the movies a go. Part one was a touched up rehash of the original opening episodes, but part two goes a bit further.

The tale of the mistaken prince and an evil egg – a review of the Anthem of the Heart

It is not an uncommon trope in anime for young children to be catastrophically affected by an unfortunate event up until a time, in their middle or high school life, when they are forced to confront it.

theanthemoftheheart_5.png

This is the case for the young, carefree dreamer Jun Naruse who inadvertently reveals to her mother that her father has been spending time at a love hotel with another woman. The separation leads both parents to cursing Jun for speaking too much, and from the girl’s imagination an egg is born, preventing her from speaking more under threat of stomach pain.
