Seasonal anime in 2017 has not been amazing. Maybe it’s because I’ve chosen badly or because what did air just wasn’t to my taste, but there have been very few shows that I can honestly say will stand out when I look back at anime in the future.
It is unfortunately the case then that the worst of the anime I’ve experienced came in the final three months of the year. That’s not to say that there weren’t good anime airing in Fall, if ratings and fellows bloggers reviews are anything to go by then I know that is the case for sure, but I just didn’t see any of them.
As well as Fate/Apocrypha which started in the summer, I only picked up four shows for the Fall and in one way or another they all disappointed me in some way. That’s not to say I haven’t enjoyed what I’ve watched since October – I saw the second season of My Hero Academia and moments of a couple of the shows were pretty good while others made me smile just because of how bad they are. Anyhow, let’s go through each one in some more depth.
Fate/Apocrypha is one of the bigger anime set for release in Summer 2017, but if you live outside of Japan, you would be better of considering it a Fall 2017 anime. The reason for that you ask? Netflix got the rights.
Before I go into full rant mode, let me just fill you in on some of the other details of this anime. Fate/Apocrypha is set in a parallel universe to Fate/Stay Night and tells the story of how, after the third holy grail war (that is the war before Kiritsugu Emiya and the events of Fate/Zero) the greater grail is stolen, leading to an attempt by the Mages’ Association to reclaim it. A seven on seven greater grail war ensues between two factions. For the original source material, you’ll need to learn Japanese or find some fan translations of the five volume light novel series.
The anime of Spring 2017 are coming to an end and it is time to look forward to the next season of TV anime. I’m going to talk about the shows I’ll be watching as well as some of the others than I may or may not go for depending on their initial reception.
This is the show I’m most excited for this summer. Take the core concept of Fate/Stay Night and turn it on its head, turning a battle royal between seven masters and servants into a war between teams. The Red team – the Mages’ Association versus the Black team – the rebellious Yggdramillennia faction. I haven’t read the light novels, so there are lots of specifics I don’t know. I’m certainly looking forward to a new anime entry to the Fate franchise and hopefully A-1 Pictures won’t let us down! (Oh, and Egoist likely performing the opening, so there’s another tick in the box!)
If three years has seemed like too much a hiatus for the Fate series to anyone, Type Moon has responded in 2017 with (at least) three prospective new shows this year. Alongside ufotable’s Fate/Stay Night: Heaven Feel and Shaft’s Fate/Extra Last Encore, we’ve got A-1 Pictures’ Fate Apocrypha. As many of you will know, I’m a big fan of the Fate franchise (don’t worry, I won’t subject you to another month like this one though…) so all of this is big news.
On Sunday afternoon we got the second trailer for Apocrypha:
I don’t know a whole lot about the light novels, but the basic premise seems to be that a Great Holy Grail War takes place between to opposing mage factions, Red and Black in a world that is parallel to that of Stay Night. There are lots of characters that we’ve never met before so I’m hoping A-1 Pictures will have forked out to gives us 24 episodes. Also… there’s a servant called Shirou Kotomine?! I want a family tree of both worlds now.
There’s something quite exciting about the start of a new anime season, and winter 2017 was no exception especially as I was just getting this blog back up and running again! January saw me finish a few shows as well as pick up some new titles as well some that have been on my plan to watch list for a while. Before I get into any opinion, analysis or otherwise paragraphed writing, let’s do some stats.
I posted 18 new articles…
Completed 10 anime tv shows or movies…
Was given 47 WordPress user likes
And had 8 new followers.
Despite writing more articles in January than any other month I’ve had this blog, I haven’t really watched that much anime. Though I’ve completed 10 anime according to MAL, 4 of them were movies or specials and 3 had been shows that I’ve been watching for a while.
